East Ukrainian rebels inspect the crash site of MH17

Is everyone enjoying the show? The ridiculously transparent attempt by the entire Western media and their political ‘elite’ masters to use the alleged shooting down of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 as part of their ‘asymmetric’ warfare against Russia and Vladimir Putin. Even the supposedly ‘leftist’ UK Guardian newspaper has been running headlines like World demands answers from Russia after Malaysia Airlines plane’s destruction over Ukraine and Hilary Clinton (wasn’t she fired?) wasted no time in declaring authoritatively that Russian rebels were responsible for the downing of the plane and that “Putin has gone too far”. Clinton’s statement clearly exposes her own and her former government’s complete lack of respect for due process, truth, and the extreme prejudice with which they both view the Russian Federation. It’s also clearly complete and utter BS because no one could possibly know who was responsible for the shooting down of Flight MH17 just a few hours after it fell out of the sky.

Then again, the US government never did let the facts get in the way of a good dose of propaganda, and to be fair, from the point of view of Clinton and her ilk, Putin has gone ‘too far’, but it has nothing to do with any Malaysian aircraft. Read More →

Obama supporters get excited about his re-election and the American dream

I have to admit, as Presidential acceptance speeches go, Obama’s acceptance speech was impressive. It was emotionally provocative (for Americans and non-Americans alike), it was full of hope, calls to action and the collective responsibility of “we the people”. It was all about pumping popular pride in the great United States of America, as the greatest nation on earth. It pushed all the right emotional buttons for Americans and reminded them about everything they have been programmed to believe, since childhood, about the country they live in. It was all about the American dream and the American myth. Obama claimed he has “never been more hopeful about our future, never been more hopeful about America.” and proclaimed that “the best is yet to come.” In short, it was a bunch of jingoistic nonsense that flew in the face of the reality of life in the USA and what it has done and continues to do to the rest of the world.

The myth of America and ‘the American dream’, as promoted by politicians and media pundits etc. has been very effective in buffering the average American against the truth of what America has been and is today. But the grandiose words of politicians alone is never enough to keep the citizens content and obedient. To be truly effective, claims of American exceptionalism and superiority had to be backed up by evidence of it on the ground, and to that effect, America really has been the most prosperous and developed nation in the world for a long time.

The ‘quality of life’ of the average American over the last 100 years has been above that of other ‘developed’ nations and far above that of most of the rest of the world. This high level of living standard was provided, primarily, by access to modern technology and easy access to jobs and ‘personal wealth’. But how did Americans get access to the technology, and why have jobs and personal wealth been so plentiful in the USA as compared to other nations?
That’s where the American myth comes in. Read More →

For all those who may, despite Netanyahu’s compelling argument at the UN yesterday, feel themselves teetering on the brink of falling for the foul-smelling propaganda about Iran and its “nuclear threat” to the world, there are a few things I’d like you to consider.

In the last 6 years or so, there have been literally dozens of official reports and comments about Iran’s nuclear program, and virtually all of them have stated that there is no evidence that Iran is planning to develop a nuclear weapon. The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly stated that there is no evidence that Iran has diverted uranium to a weapons program. In addition, the true power in Iran, the Ayatollah Khamenei, issued a Fatwa against nuclear weapons in 2005.

What Iran is doing is attempting to achieve a ‘nuclear capability’ like nuclear power plants and Medical reactors etc. The problem for Israel (or so Netanyahu claims on behalf of all Israelis), is that once Iran achieves this ‘nuclear capability’ there is little to stop them from using that capability to ultimately produce a nuclear weapon, if they choose to do so. “Killing your own people” – a good strategy in the face of foreign invasions (if you’re an imbecile)

In case you haven’t noticed, Western governments have never shown much creativity when trying to find an excuse to wage a war against another nation. Usually, they just rely on the gullibility of the masses of people and on the mainstream media to repeatedly spread the lie. On several occasions, such a the Gulf of Tonkin incident, their creativity has extended to attacking themselves (or claiming they have been attacked).

In recent years, as the US political and military juggernaut has grown more desperate in its search for new foreign resources to prop up the failing empire, the causus belli has been reduced to the puerile claim that such and such a leader is “killing his own people”. But the plausibility of this claim, in terms of the leaders against whom it has been used, and the context in which it has been used, rests on a belief that is entirely implausible. Read More →

About a year ago, I put together a short video that posed the question of whether or not the dumbed-down, brain dead future America depicted in the comedy movie ‘Idiocracy‘ was actually a close enough depiction of America today:

Today, I found more proof that, while there are many very disturbing aspects of our global society, America seems to be leading the charge towards the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of the experiment that was modern human society.

At first I thought it was a spoof, but apparently it’s not.

‘Ultimate Taser Ball’. Watch it and weep, or at least reflect on the type of society required to produce such an idiocy:

"I promised you we would win. We have won. Glory to Russia," Vladimir Putin said Sunday after a landslide victory in Russia's presidential election.

Let’s face it, most people don’t have the time, energy or inclination to try to separate truth from lies in our world today. The ability to do so is, however, crucial for many reasons. For over ten years, we here at Sott.net have been analysing and writing on what passes for the ‘news’ and we’ve come to a conclusion that may be of help to those who can’t, or won’t, do their own digging for the truth.

The conclusion is that you can, with a reasonable degree of certainty, assume that the truth about any major political event can be found more or less 180 degrees from what politicians or the media (especially US and European politicians and media) claim. Try it out. To do this, you have to do it consciously. So take any current major political news item in the media and, in your mind, flip it 180 degrees. When reading the headline or summary of a news item, simply reverse the statement that it makes. I can assure you that this 180 version will be a lot closer to the truth.

Take for example Vladimir Putin’s recent election victory. Check the headlines from major Western ‘news’ corporations and you’ll see that they all smear, subtly and not so subtly, Putin’s win with allegations of ‘corruption’. Rupert Murdoch’s Sky News went so far as to put ‘scare quotes’ around the words ‘wins election’. Virtually all other media outlets carried the same disparaging headline in one form or another, which is not surprising since there are about 3 or 4 actual Western ‘news’ agencies that report on events and then simply share the information with their subsidiaries. In this case, our 180 degree approach works rather well. Read More →

For those readers who are part of the 40% of human beings who think Ignorance is Bliss, stop reading now. This article is about a truth so hard that it was actually depressing to write it. You might think that working on SOTT for many years, most of us are pretty tough and can deal with the hard stuff. But sometimes, you see something that rings a bell, and you know that you’ve had a glimpse behind the curtain, because somebody went before and left a map to show you the way. In this case, that person was Hannah Arendt.

The modern world can’t be an easy place to live in for those who are born genetically predisposed to crave absolute power over others. I mean, these days, any would-be totalitarian has only a very small chance of being born into one of the world’s few remaining overt dictatorships, and a much greater chance of being born into a large Western nation that is nominally democratic. While fulfillment of the megalomaniac’s innate drive is a walk in the park in a dictatorship, it requires all sorts of protracted subterfuge in a democracy. Bummer.

The main problem with giving free reign to one’s dictatorial leanings in a democracy is the whole ‘citizen’s rights’ and ‘Rights of Man’ thing. How is any self-aggrandizing despot to lord it over the masses, and watch them squirm and suffer and beg, when everyone seems convinced that there are not only democratic and legal rights but also natural ‘inalienable’ rights that come with just being a human being? Ideas that everyone is ‘created equal’ and has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness etc. can cause a lot of problems for the average authoritarian. Naturally then, in any democracy, all those rights would have to be removed before any oligarchy could transform citizens into subjects, and they’d have to be removed under the cloak of ‘protecting’ the very rights that were slated for extinction. A tall order indeed, but there are ways to do it.

One tried and tested way is to create a foreign or external threat from which the people of a democracy must be protected. All sorts of draconian laws that subvert civil rights can be passed to combat this ‘threat’, and if the ‘threat’ can then be made internal or domestic, and suspicion of ‘siding with enemy’ cast over the citizens, you’re well on your way to banishing those pesky legal and natural rights.
